How could a small business like mine benefit from having an EPOS system? Would it be worth the effort and cost when the system I have in place already works well.?
It depends on your turn over I suppose. If you are financially ok then I would definately recommend it. It is more reliable and does alot of the work for you including monotoring stock levels saving you time and money too.

The whole purpose of EPOS is to enable a retailer to speed up sales transactions and report more readily on sales transaction (How many, when, which assistant made the transaction, was it a bank card or cash etc...)
If you don't need to speed up your transactions and you don't need to report on your sales to any great extent you don't reallly need EPOS.
You must have a DEMAND before you should think about trying to justify a COST.
Some questions for you:
How many stores/outlets do you have?
What product/s do you sell?
How many items do you sell per day per store?

Epos solutions can benefit your business in a big way if utilized correctly, and using the correct solution.
Epos systems in have general features such as stock control, item search, discount offers, purchase orders, many reports. Other specialised Epos systems will have other features.
Stock control is done at the till point, items which are sold are reduced from stock automatically. Any deposits are reserved, but not sold and returns are kept as seperate stock. This will increase your security on stock shrinkages, you will now exactly, or what you should have in stock, saving you money on purchases.
Stock lookup enables you to search for stock instead of going into the back room or asking a colleague for information. All this can be done at the till point providing the customer with fast and efficent service.
Using purchase orders can order the correct amount of stock in for you, so your not over or under stocked. This goes hand in hand with the reports as you know exactly what to buy based upon profit, not a gut feeling based upon sales. With the reports you have all the facts.
We supply EPOS solutions to the majority types of retailer, if you wish to contact me to discuss further please see my details below.

EPOS is helpful if you have a great number of product lines and you want some control over it
You can perform price changes almost instantly, only needing to replace the Shelf Edge Labels (SELs)
Without EPOS you would need to reprice each and all of those items
You can monitor specific product sales, and any that do not sell but you thought did can be changed for something that does
If you have several employees then you can monitor their performance and cash handling
You can also incentivise from this, for example basket size
Customers will also appreciate the speed and honesty it offers
There is nothing worse than getting to the till when the assistant has to guess the price of a tin of beans, which keep changing price every day!
More advanced systems will also allow you to book deliveries and returns in to the them, perform stock adjustments, generate suggested orders, or even place orders for you!
