I have my own website but have never been able to place top 10 in the search engines. I have read about SEO and even tried to optimize to achieve better positioning without any results.
Can anyone point me to the right direction? I really don't know what I am doing wrong. I am not a professional developer, I am self taught, but have been writing html for years.

Any help will be greatly appreciated..

Send me your website URL in a PM and I will look into advise accordingly

The first thing is to compose meta-tags that are relevant to your website
Once you have done this, compare the use of these words in search engines and see what comes up

If your website is already spidered then it should take between two and fourteen days for the updates to apply

Once your website has been spidered, recheck the keywords and compare

However, many search engines are now glorified paid advertising
As a result only if you pay them does your website get a higher rank
I noticed this with google UK, and since I signed up with Google AdWords my website has jumped from about place 50 to 200 in searches to within the top 10 in some searches, and in one it is now number 2!

This has all been caused from the shift away from meta-tags
They are useful, but search engines are no longer dependent on them

Hello, I am getting you very well..

There’re so many factors: on page: keyword in title, link text, in bold, link text from back links, size of your site, frequency of updating your site..
Or Have a look at Organic Search Engine Optimization (http://webwisemedia.com/) that for some more tips. The main thing is that seems to work is getting you to top from other sites to help you rank well.
Thanks!!

To get good positions in Google you need good backlinks. That's other relevant sites pointing to your site preferably with valid keywords in the text.
For example I market my Fancy Dress costumes (http://www.dees-fancydress.co.uk)by inserting our URL on as many sites as possible. you can check how many backlinks you have with link:www.yoursite.com. in a google search.
You will need as many if not more good backlinks as your competitors.
Check how many backlinks they have.
Hope this helps.

Its not completely necessary to have links to increase the search engine position
In fact I have one website that is keyword position one and has no links at all!

The main concern is relevancy, and Google now have a tool for this in their WebMaster section

Meta Tags are only some of the factors involved, lots of engines no-longer use keywords.
The most important things on any web site are:
1. The Title (Should incorporate some keywords)
2. The description (Should incorporate some more key words)
3. The content - should be original and full of keywords and key phrases.

You really need to have strategies that will suite the engines you want to target as they do vary. Your keyword or key phrase list needs to be current and the realy good software packages update these trend lists monthly (I am thinking Trellian)

Follow this link to a blog site I feel you may find usefull, it has a simple product for those wanting initial advise on internet marketing but it also has info on the Trellian software package which I highly recommend.

Meta Tags are only some of the factors involved, lots of engines no-longer use keywords.

There is only one search engine worth optimising for, and that's Google. If you do the right things by Google then your website should also perform well on Yahoo Search, MSN, Live and other minor search engines, but its not a massive issue.

We've a couple of useful articles covering search engine marketing (http://www.internetretailer.biz/partner/search_engine_marketing.aspx?qsaid=146), swapping links with other websites (http://www.internetretailer.biz/partner/link_swapping_with_other_web_sites.aspx?qsaid=147) and a new one on Longtail SEO (http://www.internetretailer.biz/partner/longtail_seo.aspx?qsaid=577), hope they help!

it is already in the top ten

Top ten of what and with what search phrase?

A common 'slight of hand' that less scrupulous SEO services use is to state that they can guarantee a page one position on Google, and when you sign up to them you find that your page one listing ends up being an obscure search phrase that is rarely ever used.

We specialise in SEO for Ecommerce businesses and have placed websites on page one of Google for searches on handbags, designer handbags, martial arts, aromatherapy, fashion jewellery etc and even we don't guarantee a page one placement.

You should base your decision on the track record of an SEO company (http://www.geran.co.uk) and decide whether the costs involved are an investment, or just an expense.
