So you've got a website?
Now you want to make some money?

Firstly :
you MUST be registered with the Inland Revenue as your website will be deemed as commercial

Secondly :
If it is a .uk Domain Name you can no longer opt-out, again same reason as above

First of all decide what type of advert suits your website
Banner adverts
Some people prefer banner adverts, they come in various pixel sizes but the most popular are :
button 120 x 60
small 234 x 60
traditional 468 x 60
tower 120 x 600
large 720 x 60
Banner adverts are normally fixed, as these call an image from the website
To rotate the images requires a script, not complicated but it can be time consuming finding a suitable one
Text adverts
These are becoming more popular and taking over from banner adverts
These come in almost any size you can think of!

So where do you get the images and links from?
These are obtained from affiliate schemes
Some are really good, whilst others aren't worth a click on!
Here are my recommendations :
affiliatefuture.co.uk 3/10
affiliatewindow.com 2/10
affiliate-program.amazon.co.uk 8/10
clickxchange.com 0/10
cj.com 3/10
google.com/adsense 7/10
tradedoubler.co.uk 6/10
dgmpro.com 2/10
Only sign up if you have an active website with content
Once signed up, you then subscribe to advertisers, otherwise known as programs
Some will be auto-authorising, others will want to review your website before authorising the link

I've got my links, now what?
You've heard of location, location, location
Well the same applies with advertising placement on websites!
First :
Make sure your adverts do NOT detract from your existing content
This will just cause your visitors to go elsewhere
Second :
The adverts should be subtle
You'e all seen them, those large flashing adverts!
Again, the majority of visitors know that they are an advert and will not click on them
Third :
Once you have located your affiliate image and link on your website, test it!
There is no point placing an advert if it doesn't work
If it doesn't work or takes you to the wrong website, check the code
If the code is correct, contact the affiliate scheme, mistakes do happen!
However, in most affiliate schemes you are not permitted to purchase from your own affiliate links, so check the Terms and Conditions that apply
Failure to follow this rule can result in you being suspended from the program or the scheme

How are they performing?
Most affiliate schemes include monitoring information
Login to your account at least once a week or once a month and see which links are performing and which are not
If the links are poorly performing then consider changing or removing them

Are my adverts are out of date?
Some advertisers will update their images (and links) quite often, as often as once a week, others very rarely
Again, login to your account and check for updates, and replace any images and code accordingly
You may notice a new TV or press advert, and there is not much point you having an old advert on your website!

I am using Google AdWords, anything I should know?
Google AdWords sends a spider to your website (typically every month) and uses the keywords to generate the text links
Make sure the keywords in use match the content, otherwise you could end up with the default or even worse inappropriate links!
You can also exclude certain websites in your account, useful if your competition appears in the links!

I am using Amazon UK, anything I should know?
There are two tier programs
Monitor these very carefully and swap between them once your commision rate drops
Sadly, Amazon don't tell or warn you about this!

I'm happy to answer any questions about affiliate schemes
I have been using them on my websites since about 2002

This is a great post. One thing to add, some merchants choose to run their affiliate program in-house. For example, the Passion affiliate program (http://www.passiononline.co.uk/about-us/our-affiliate-program) has many useful features to make life easy for the affiliate site.

You get the benefit of working directly with the merchant, for a faster and more efficient relationship.

Both small businesses (like us) and large businesses (like Amazon) run their programs in-house.

GPS Locals

It is reassuring to know that the affiliate “type program” works in the UK.

GPS Locals gives free affiliation to outlets who register on our interoperable database, or you can just register FREE as an affiliate.

An email is sent with your own affiliate details embedded and you have access via your own login control panel to monitor the progress, so just for sending an email with a link or placing our “find us on GPS locals” logo on your website, you earn 20% commission for any registration through your link.

Hope this helps

Paul

"GPS Locals gives free affiliation" ?

Never pay to be an affiliate.
