This is one of the duties of my role, and this might make an interesting insight into anyone that employs people

I am currently investigating a loss in a store
I was initially asked to visit as the Manager had been trying to get proof of a member of staff she was suspicious of

I arrived whilst this member of staff was still on duty, although they had not been made aware of why I was present, a good cover story was in place
They appeared more interested in what I was doing than their job!
A short while later their shift finished and the Manager arrived
We then closed the shop, much to the surprise of the person that had just started their shift, and started to watch the CCTV footage
Initially we could not see any problems
We then went to the two stockrooms
There was little sign that this person had done any stocking up during the night, from the first one
In the second stockroom the Manager advised that some of the items had been tidied up and grouped together
We then noticed an empty box behind some stock, which didn't belong there
We then went to where that stock would have come from, on the other side of the stockroom, and the entire boxes contents had been ripped out and was empty

We then reclaimed and searched all the bins, but we could not find the rubbish which the Manager had thrown out the previous day!

We then went back to the CCTV footage, and the box had only arrived on the previous days delivery
There were no further deliveries after that time
No other member of staff went into this stockroom after this time either

We then started to watch all the CCTV footage, whilst this member of staff was on duty
Now after 23:00 the store is "closed", and the rear door is covered by a security system
However at 23:49 an unknown person suddenly appears in the rear corridor
This person then enters the main shop floor, appears to take some stock, and then returns to the corridor
Sadly we couldn't find any empty packets that matched the stock from this area
We then contacted the alarm company and they provided a list of all the times the rear door had been opened, that alone was a breach of this companies security procedure from the information they provided

After consulting this companies HR department they agreed there was enough evidence, based on the rear door security log, to termiate this persons emplyment without notice

Further investigation showed that this person was also incorrectly processing BOGOF offers on the till
The total loss was estimated at £2500 (£800 at cost) in just three months

I used to be incredibly shocked when cases like this would appear when I first started in Retail. It's the level of dishonesty that shocks me the most. And the sad thing is , that Greed takes over people . But there are alot of people out there who have positions of authority and are abusing their positions.

I was in a House of Fraser store today

I found a purse with a label cut-off
You wouldn't normally think anything in to this too much

However, I then pointed out to the Manager, that the person then attaches that label to that for an item of a higher value, lets say a handbag
So in effect they pay less for a more valuable item

They then pass over this handbag and receipt to a friend, who then returns to the store, and aks for a refund
Not bad way to make quick and easy CASH

Having the stolen goods is one thing, but it takes a certain kind of thief to work out how to quickly turn that into CASH

The Manager checked the weeks returns, and sure enough, there was one return for a £165 handbag

That's insane. And it really annoys me , that everyone else has to work and save up to by expensive things , but at the end of the day they can't be feeling all that great about themselves !!
