Does anyone know of a good open source EPOS software package? Ideally a Microsoft .Net solution but any recommendations would be most welcome.

Not used any of them but try these :

http://www.turbocashuk.com
Although the manual and support is £100

Also, search sourceforge, that's where I get most of my open source software

Sourceforge - excellent resource.

Not sure of any open-source products - would be interested in finding some actually.

This has got me tempted, now that most EPOS systems are just glorified personal computers or basic LAN

One of the major problems stopping small retailers are the software costs
The equipment is going to cost the same irrespective, but its always the software cost that puts many off

Smaller retailers simply go for a sanning till, with no inventory control
In the event of failure, the entire system needs to be binned
At least if it is personal computer based then replacement parts and upgrades would be cheaper in the long-term
