Do you reply to every CV that you get handed or job application, even if the candidate doesn't even make it to the interview stage ?

No, I only reply to those that I finally chose for interview
I advise them all equally that they will be informed in writing within 10 days

I'm just interested as I know some companies do reply to everyone, I just get so many CVS I just do the same as you do, or I would be doing nothing else other than replying to them

If you took the time to reply to each and every job application, think of the TOTAL cost
The time to compile the reply, print it out, and place in an envelope
There is then cost for the time to do the above, plus the material costs and the postage

Personally, the cheaper option is FILE 13

I defiantelyy do not have time to go trawling through and replying to each and every application that is made!

I think its unreasonable to expect that!

For email applications we do have an nauto reply that tells them if they have not been contacted in xx days then they were not successful etc...

I think it is unrealisic too. The amount of people who I have inteviewed, but they do expect a response regardless. I had many a person phoning in asking had they been successful. I do wish I had the time to reply to all of them though. It's always one of those, 'if i get time' jobs.

Exactly and people dont seem to understand how time consuming it is!

If applicants are emailed in I would make it to a jobs@ or careers@ email address and then have an autoresponder saying if you have not heard from us in xx days then unfortunately blah blah blah... Just makes things easier I think!

HR departments have really suffered during this recession - it has really been whittled down. Although job seekers can find it frustrating when they hear nothing back it is unrealistic to reply to every CV that comes through the door, especially with the numbers of applicants applying for one job.

I advise that the job advert itself should have some statement about notifications - so the applicants can see it written in black and white. eg "due to the sheer volume of applicantions only successful candidates will be contacted" :)

Agreed Emily-O thats a great suggestion!

As a jobseeker you can sometimes feel as if some jobs you apply for are non existent. You seem to be applying for so many positions and rarely hear back from anyone.

Another thing I hate when appyling for jobs is when their is an advert for a position - however it was filled weeks ago - the recruiter is just to lazy to take the advert down.

This is wrong in my opinion! It is not fair on the people applying fo the job atall! it gets thier hopes up for no reason and can get you down if thereare too many dead ends when you are applying for work!

Really depends on you. Think of the image your giving to employees.

Respond to all telling them they have been unsuccessful may seem a hassle but gives your company more respect from the unsucessful candidates.

Yea thats true ... So why don't they care more about the impression they are giving?

SallyA

Maybe with the sheer volume of candidates that each recruiter gets today they find it hard to getthe time to repond to every individual!

Thats why I think its better to have an ato email that goes out to them telling them that they may not get a response because....

Unfortunately this method can only work with email applications so again it is very limited!

It is really just the costs involved and time. Whilst that staff member/members are producing/copying letter and sending it out to the unsuccessful candidates in the "owners" eyes this is less productive and wasting valuable time and in a way i guess this is right.

I still would personally reply to all unsuccessful candidates its just a simple swap name address process with the letters. Its gives the unsuccessful candidate the appreciation and thanking them for their effort and time.

Exactly, maybe they could send out a mail shot to the list of candidates that applied notifying them that unfortunately they were unsuccessful in their application.

I have actually had emails like this from recruiters and companies - if you’re someone who is quite organised in applying for jobs that actually would suite your past experience then it would be nice if you could get an organised response...

I have had this feedback before as well but do honestly think that if you get 300 applicants for 2 jobs or whatever it is very hard to do this!

Unfprtunatekly that is just the way it is and there is nothing that we can do about it!

Agree with both, Nothing we can do and it's nice to have a response from those who are organised. Again like sally said nothing we can do, just if and when i recruit i will certainly respond. Reputation of a business in my eyes is vital :D

I suppose the bigger the volume of applicants the harder it would be to reply aswell.

I suppose us job seekers will just have to get use to it!! lol

Sorry if this post is considered 'late' but as an applicant it is rarely possible to know just how many people have applied for the same position. Therefore recruitment agencies or employers should at the very least state that
' applicants who have not had a response within 14 days should consider their application unsuccessful.' Sadly all too often the applicant receives no response whatsoever.
