View Full Version : NVQ's
I was just wondering what people's thoughts were on NVQ'S. I am constantly approached to see have I got any staff members that I would like to train futher, but for me getting them to do an NVQ isn't my preferred method.
Yes but that means you are denying your staff of their future. Employers like people wth qualifications.

I'm not denying my staff anything. I am simply saying that I believe that there are better ways of learning that's all . I will put it to my staff , and if they are interested then that is there decision.
Yes but if you show negativity , you are influencing their decision!

oooohhh! ha ha ! Our first retailforum fight! I think you both have a point but have to agree with the boss. From personal experiance I left school with no qualifications and when I started working full time I started to do an NVQ , and it just wasn't for me i'm afraid. But it has helped other people who were in the same boat as me get on futher .

That would be extremely unprofessional, and I would be abusing my position of authority if I was to do that. I am simply giving my own personal opinion of NVQ's which I keep to myself when it comes to possible applicants. My job is to explain to my staff what the NVQ involves , and to respect which ever decision they decide to make off their own back , And I will continue to train and support them which ever path they decide to go down.

Ok. so what is your preferred method? Why is it your preferred method? And what are your employee's preferred methods?
And don't worry, mod's will be on hand to deal with any fisticuffs ;)
Just more on the job learning. And I know NVQ'S have aspects of this , but I find that people learn better when I myself have set them a task and work through it with them. I think that me and my management team will have more of an advantage at getting more out of our employees as we have first hand experiance and insider knowledge, rather than an NVQ trainer coming from the outside who visits a number of stores, in which of each all the systems are different.
With the employees their opinion varies. They will go home and discuss it with their families and friends and most people would say that it was a good idea, as any qualifications look good on paper . Which I would agree with . But you can still have a degree, NVQ or whatever. and still be bad at your job. As an employer yes these things can sometimes prove to be an advantage, but only if the person I am interviewing has what I am looking for. If they have there certificates but have a bad interview and don't show that they have any potential then they don't get the job.
