View Full Version : A retail job in a pet shop anyone?
It seems we have more good news in retail this week with pets at home (http://www.petsathome.com/) doing really well!
I read an article saying their profits were up 29% to 40 million for the year to March 26! Great stuff aye?
It seems that they are growing and growing and creating many more jobs in retail along the way! Who can complain at that aye?
Its no wonder they are doing so well - any of us that have a pet visit pet smart regularly for all our pets needs I’m sure! There is no one else like them out there! No competition whatsoever! They are like a supermarket for pets, you can get the lot from food to medication and the one near me even has an in house vet! What more could you want?

There is plenty of competition for Pets at Home thankfully!
Most agricultural stores sell pet food and plenty of accessories similar to Pets at Home but at cheaper prices!! The biggest problem facing these types of businesses is that most people don't know about them and when they do, they believe they are for farmers only.
These stores have come along way in the last 5-years or so and spend quite a bit of money marketing to non-farming people.
I've kept very quiet about my business but this is probably the time to reveal......lol!!
So please have a look at my website and let me know what you think.

Some of the bigger agricultural companies in the south are Countrywide Farmers and Mole Valley Farmers.

wow I love your site, I think it's true what you say though, I go straigt to pets at home when i'm sure I can get it else where much cheaper....i.e your site ;)
I don't think anyone can complain! The more retail jobs the better! I wouldn't mind working at a petshop. Although the day will start with muck and cleaning, it must be more interesting then working in a clothes shop surely? I reckon you could get some pretty good animal knowledge along the way.
Pet shops do face a bit of competition - from supermarkets and some other agricultural shops like you say. I haven't ever owned any small animals like rodents, rabbits etc. Can you buy bedding and huts in supermarkets too?
Wow Iain I didnt know you did anything pet related!
Great stuff!
I personally go to Petsmart as I can buy in bulk and it is far cheaper than anything else available to me locally! Although I did not know about agricultural stores though! Thats a new way to look and compare prices!
I mean the average shop for me in pet smart is about £60 while we have the kittens! I have recently bought 3xboxes of whiskas 24 pouches for £15, 2x kitten science plan bicscuits approc £30 and the same for the adult cats, the large bag of catsan for approx £9 and a few other bits and pieces! I will look around your website and see what the prices are like on there - would you cover Surrey? Although I don't need anything for at leats a month now hehe!
P.S. I forgot to add - I would love to work in a pet shop I think it would be fun and interesting! Hehe! I go in for cat stuff but do tend to go around looking at everything else too lol!
I have a garden centre down my road. It seems to sell a variety of dog biscuits, sawdust and possibly even straw.
At the moment I own a leopard gecko (lizard) and can't buy any of his food in agricultrual stores or supermarket. I think a few people may complain when they walk past the live cricket, live locust, live mealworms and dead pinky isle haha :D
Sounds like you have a deal in Petsmart though! I might have to check them out and see if they do any reptile equipment too!
Emily-O I would check them out if I were you as they have all sorts in there - they are like mahousive superstores for pets hehe!
I just love to wonder around and browse :D
I know that was really good compared to anything I can get in the locality for me! So as far as I am concerned in my proximity Pets at Home is the way to go! I love it!

:D Emily-o a lizard? wow. I wonder if they'll have Artemia eggs. I have Koi, and they enjoy being fed live brine shrimp. I usually buy and hatch the eggs myself, but that gets a little expensive after a bit. Maybe they'd be a little cheaper.
