I read a very disappointing article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8180970.stm) today about the retail figures in Germany!

Apparently sales figures there are down 1.6% for the same time last year! Things are so bad there they are saying its going to be the worst since WW2! Their economy is expected to contract by approximately 6% this year and unemployment has risen by 300,000 since the economic downturn began!

If you think we have it bad here - things are not looking much better there are they? If anything they look much worse to me! How many retail jobs will be lost as a result of this downturn over there?

Last week, official figures showed that German consumer prices fell for the first time in 22 years in July.

It is worrying isn't it?

I do think this is terrible, I don't think the economy is going to recover as quickly as we would like to hope.

I think the global economy is going to take many years to recover. We have to look at factors and realise how we have ran it into the ground.

Businesses everywhere are suffering - surely there is a route cause to all of this however it’s never really that simple is it?

The root cause will always lay hidden and just as you think you found it, it will change. It wont be easy no, and a lot of businesses are going to have to learn to change business tactics in order to survive.

Its not always that bad tho. It will ( if not already ) start to rise from its ashes so to speak. it will just take time.

Do you think any countries are still doing well? Surely some must be standing strong? I was told that our government is facing some hefty debt, so we must have borrowed the money from somewhere?

Emily-O I have no idea who is and isn't doing well right now! I have heard Australia isn't as affected as everyone else - but that about it! As for the borrowing????? Anyone have any idea's where the UK's debts lie?

Dark Phoenyx I also agree with you that often just as you find a cause it can change! Nothing is ever that obvioud in these matter - probably in 200 years time when everything is out in the open historians will be able to tell all hehe!

The UK national debt is the total amount of money the British government owes to the private sector.

At the end of June 2009, UK public sector net debt was...
£798.8 billion (or 56.6%% of National GDP) - Source: Office National Statistics

I quote:

"Since 2008, National Debt has increased sharply because of:

* Economics Recession (lower tax receipts, higher spending on unemployment benefits)
* Financial bailout of Northern Rock, RBS and other banks."

They say this is why, but i cant seem to find more specific details for now.

:)

That can't just be it! Hmmmmm  I think there is definately more to it! Surely someone has the job of tracking all of this and keeping an eye on things and ensuring we aren't getting inbto debt for nothing?????

The worst thing is they are not prosecuting them or making them give it back - its silly! Its technically our money! Its not fair! Every country is corrupt and thats just the way it is! You have power and you want more!

Its true. WHY dont these officials get told to give it back. Its all our tax money theyre taking to make their lives more plush. Stinks if you ask me. Power is a nasty thing if you cant control it and yourself. And it just happens. you wake up in the morning and barely recognize your face in the mirror.
