Had a short week in Barcelona in July, had a short week in London early August, then another short week in the Lakes/Scotland late September, plus a couple of days trips to Dublin... prefer to so more 'shorter' hols but will have a 'big' holiday next year.

At the end of the day, as long as you're having a break, I don't think it matters where you go.

I agree I was all geared up for a trip to Scotland or the South Coast but then my other half surprised me with these tickets so am very happy :D

I usually take lots of smaller breaks too - this is the first time in a few years I am taking a two weeks break overseas! Am looking forward to it

I have had a two week holiday already
All over the UK, cost me £1500 travelling First Class by rail
As I normally drive every day this was a refreshing change, being able to drink on most trains (meals and drinks included on most journeys)

I am due to take another weeks holiday in September, but I am driving on this one

Wow that sounds great - I have never explored the UK to its full - was it a good trip? Where did it cover?

Where are you travelling to next?

I like to go to Goa in India. Problem is that's it's a winter destination, as this time of year is monsoon time! So I had my holiday back in March :-(

Still not long until next March :-)))))

Most of the compensation claims are in as well, giving me about 10% back with just one more expected :

India and South Africa are places I would also like to go one day - but I would need to save a bit to do that! At the moment I go to places I can get to easily without having to save much! Just the way it is right now :D

As for the train Journey - that went all over the place! Not bad really I must say!

From what I hear South Africa is quite a good holiday destination. There are all sorts of tours to take and you wont get bored. :D plus the currency is weaker, so you get a lot more out of it than you thought you might.

I know and the bonus from my point of view is I have family out there too so it would be even cheaper haha! Just about getting it together and going I guess! Its a one day I will type of thing - and I want to try and do it in the next few years - I feel like I would need 2-4 weeks though to go and explore preoperly etc hehe!

Lord  That's a LOT of travel!

As for the train Journey - that went all over the place! Not bad really I must say!

Worked out at about £100 per day, which included 10 journeys on sleepers
Equally, all but two journeys were First Class
As an example that meant that Glasgow - Euston was about £25, however I was using the ticket intensively!
Most days included a light breakfast on the sleeper, a cooked breakfast on the first service in the morning (from memory there was one day when I ended up with two), either a snack or light lunch, and in most cases a hot snack or evening meal

There were no hot meals on Saturdays or Sundays, but most still offered drinks and snacks
In effect these were the only days I had to purchase food
The M&S Simply Food at Euston was my main source, with 2 salads for £5 (£4.50 each)

Another tip was to purchase the National Express East Coast catering vouchers
Each costs £4 and is worth £5 on the train
I had the staff on my London Kings Cross - Inverness service save me a Steak sandiwch as I boarded at London, which I had shortly after leaving Stirling, and adding a drink to that in effect cost me £8
A few days later I did the same to Aberdeen, for a Cottage Pie and that cost me £4

However, the best trip was between Chester and Cardiff / Cardiff and Crewe, with Arriva Trains Wales
This breakfast was excellent although the evening meal was a slight disappointment
The service was excellent

The best overall service was Wrexham & Shroshire, between London Marylebone and Wrexham
These coaches were in awful condition (as their rolling stock has not yet been delivered and the staff are clearly doing the best they can with what they currently have)
However, the breakfast was MASSIVE, it's the largest I have ever been served on a train!

The best internet connection was on Virgin Trains, where I managed to stay connected and upload two videos you YouTube between London Euston and Glasgow
The best mobile broadband internet was again on Wrexham & Shropshire, the slow speed of the train probably helps, but I rarely lost connection on three mobile

It sounds like quite an adventure I must say! It is something I wouldnt think of when thinking of holidays but now I may reconsider this as this does seem like quite a good option - esp to see the country I was born and raised in! I mean I have barely seen half of it!

Several reasons for it...

I worked on the railway in the early 1990s
I wanted to see how much it had changed since in 10 years, as a few journeys I have made over that time have been quite different
At the time First Class customers got nothing more than a larger seat, however now this has expanded to include drinks, snacks, and in some cases breakfast / meal

One of the transport websites I was maintaining suffered problems last year
I therefore created my own, based on the revenue it was generating
This required me to go back to basics, and this was an ideal opportunity to bring myself back up to date on tickets, travel planning, and so on

I had never been by train on the West Highland line (Glasgow - Fort William)
This did mean I would sacrafice the First Class portion on the return journey from Fort William, but I did get the sleeper to Fort William, and there is nothing like having breakfast on that journey!
Equally, I had never been by train between Plymouth and Penzance

One final advantage is that I normally travel all over the UK by car
On this occasion I only had to use the car three times (as there are no overnight trains on Saturday)
I was therefore able to drink not just tea, coffee, and orange juice!

wow, I dont travel by train at all, but it sounds so exciting. You only used the car 3 times? cool. Then you could have seen a bit of the towns you were in as well. I think i might look into this at some point :D thank you for all the info.

Just got back from my holioday guys and I have to say it was amazing! 10 days in Madeira did not feel like nearly enough to do all the exploring we needed to do so definately somewhere I will be heading off to again!

Its a beautiful little island and very hard to get lost there as eventually you will always see signs to where you came from etc..... The roads higher up in the mountains are a bit scary though - but it is a lovely place to go! Definately recommend it to anyone who is thginking of going away!
