4NI.co.uk (http://www.4ni.co.uk/northern_ireland_news.asp?id=98860) report that in 2010 retailers are going to feel the worst effects of the recession so far.

Apparently there has been a major downward turn in High Street sales that could be caused by rising unemployment all round.

The report suggested more than 5000 shops will shut in 2010, 400 more than predicted for this year!! ehhhhh thats not good . I thought that retail jobs (http://www.careers-jobs.eu/retail-jobs) were looking good so far, I guess not by the sound of things being said now, the lower consumer credit will have a negative effect on everything.

Do you believe this or think its more negative hype?

I mean seriously do you think it can get worse? If so how much worse???? Eeeeek!!!!

I am hoping that things will be better next year rather than worse - I need a payrise lol!!!! Won't be seeing that till things pick up a bit!!!

Yes im with you on the pay rise SallyA think we could all do with a little extra these days, its hard to get by most months :( and im not sure if this could be true or not as some people have said that the Retail sector is doing quite well actually, im hoping it is just negative publicity.

Im feeling more positive today as while I was getting ready this am I had the tv on in the back ground and they were saying it looks good right now. There are definate signs of recovery in the economy :)

Obviously they will not know for sure until the reports for this quarter are released in October - but i am evr hopeful hehe!

That was my bit of intelligent blurb for the day! See how much you can learn from the BBC? Hehehe!

Oh god don't talk about tv and it not being good lol! I remember when my grandfather used to try and ration our tv hours when we were younger lol!

I love tv - esp in winter when its too cold to get out and about! It suits me to a 't' lol!

You know i used to be a tv freak had my programmes i used to watch every day religiously such as days of our lives and all the reality series such as amazing race and survivor, those i still watch without fail, and then i used to spend the rest of my time playing playstation games ;), but lately iv taken to doing other things outdoors, I live in a place with some of the best scenery and places to visit so im on a mission to see as much as i can, you only live once and iv decided im not gna be couch potato no more lol, but on cold or boring days when I have nothing else to do, its a family thing to get dvd's, then we all snuggle up under our duvets which i still enjoy a lot.

I used to be the same! I had certain times for watching certain things! Now Im lucky if I get two/three hours a week in front of the tv! At the moment the only thing I really strive to watch is Ugly Betty heheh! Even East enders has fallen off my radar recently! I might catch the odd episode!

I can't see the economic climate really getting any better for 2010. They're putting the VAT back up in January already, and I'd find it hard to believe that anyone actually felt any benefit from that or increased their spending because of it.

House prices have just started to creep up but to me this feels premature as people are doing this thinking it's the right time but will end up struggling to afford it still.

The recession is meant to have officially ended but the pains of the aftermath will carry on for quite a while yet, and it'll never recover back to what it was. In my opinion, its not a down turn but a shift in the economic climate and peoples general spending.

Hi rosszero, I dont think I have seen you in here before?

I think you are absolutely correct in what you are saying! Nothing is goign to suddenly improve overnight!

No matter what people keep saying about it having officially ended I am a bit skeptical - job losses will still happen all over the place as far as Im concerned! I mean it would be lovely to go back to where we were but that is highly unlikely!
