View Full Version : Will a cut in Public Spending lead to job cuts?
Who has seen this latest news today and what do you think it means?
I mean if Gordon Brown is to announce a plan for cuts in
public spending (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/8255938.stm) – where will these cuts take place? Do you think many jobs will be at risk as a result of this? Apparently unions are already prepared for the fight!
They say they will cut spending on ‘low priorities’, but what do you class as a low priority?
I hope it doesn’t affect things such as education and healthcare! I already saw something on TV the other day about kids in Camden being taught in a church hall due to a lack of places and funding! Are we going to be seeing more of this do you think?
Or will it be a case of cutting back where we all think it should happen anyway! MP’s and their dreaded expenses! Not likely haha!

The PCS union definately doesnt look happy at all. Im also left wondering now, what are low priority cuts... once again its too vague to get a clear picture.
There might be job losses, thats what the PCS is worried about, there are over 6 million public sector workers, can you imagine what would happen if a percentage of that lost their jobs?

It's an interesting debate - those in the private sector have seen huge redundancies and cut-backs, so it's only the same the public sector should follow, surely?
That said, they need to make cut-backs in the right areas.
P.S. SallyA - congratulations on 200 posts!

This seems like a never ending circle!
More job cuts -> were coming out of recession -> More job cuts -> were coming out of the recession.
I guess we just have to sit tight and watch - not as if we have the power to do anything..

Thats the truth Abi. all we can do is sit back and watch. Its not like we have the power to control mister browns' thought patterns.... :D
Im still left wondering about the low priority areas. there are a lot of ways they can say its low priority, when we think it isnt really. Its true wot you say retailworld. they have to make those cuts in the right areas.

Wo0Ho0 I didnt even notice that! :p
I agree with you on this though! Its obvious cuts have to be made - lets just hope they are made in the right places???
This morning there was some debate on TV as well as the Lib Dems (I think) were saying that houses over 1million should pay more council tax or something as it isnt fair that they pay the same as much smaller houses blah blah????
Its a never ending circle of where and how to recoup some money! I mean cuts have to be made somewhere I agree with that - but where they will be made is a question isn't it?

One thing I'd like to know is - when road works are going on my mum always complains that its the councils have to much money for the tax year so are spending in the roads??! is this true?
If so why don't you refund it back to the people who most need it?
Grr.

Sorry did I just hear the words 'council' and 'refund' in the same sentence?
I have never heard that before and don't think I will again either hehe!

Different rules for them and different rules for us I guess and its ok for them to carry on living in comfort while the average person struggles to make ends meet!

aaaaaaaaah that rightly sux. :D I hate this double standard really. I mean apart from having seats in parliament, they are people. just like us. normal average people. Just because they govern certain areas, doent make em special.
