This is brilliant people have a look at this news article Evening Times Online (http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/news/display.var.2530674.0.almost_2000_people_join_hunt _for_700_retail_jobs.php)
Because of Glasgow's fast growing retail sector it has started a huge job rush.
They say that so far, 1997 people have applied for work at the St Enoch Centre, thats almost treble the number of 700 vacancies being created as a result of a £100million expansion
This is a recruitment drive and the jobs (http://www.careers-jobs.eu/) campaign is one of their most successful and they are busy with interviews to find extra staff before the Christmas rush and we all know Christmas is just around the corner again.
The existing stores such as BHS and Game, along with fast food firm McDonald's, have already identified possible recruits, while bigger stores planned by Boots, Debenhams and Dorothy Perkins are also generating more jobs, and dozens of recruits are also being targeted by major retailers who plan to trade at St Enoch for the first time.
This is some really good news for people living in this area, looks like there will be quite a good few jobs available.

That’s great news, especially for those who thought the retail sector was dropping in both sales and job figures.
Now this is just my personal opinion but I think we have to get use to today’s heighten and drop in all figures around at these times and for the foreseeable future this will be the case for a very long time. I can't see employment or sales figures stabilising for years - however I don't think this is something that should alarm people but it should make people aware that markets around us are changing - maybe not for the better however it will see slackers losing their jobs and useless items being sold in retail being by-passed.
So this economic down turn may well in the long run do us all some good in one way or another.

Yeah Abi4Retail I think it will be up and down for a while yet and thats just something we have to live with, there are continuous reports of job creation and an equal amount for job losses, and you are right about the slackers, they will always be the first to go when companies decided to downsize, the market changes are bound to happen and if you think about it they do happen anyway from time to time even before the recession hit us, change is sometimes a good thing and maybe at first it may be seen as a negative, but it will probably help us in the long run as you said.

However, I suspect the source is the DWP as they are more than likely providing the facilities for interviews
Of the 2000 people, how many actually have retail experience or could be considered "suitable applicants"
Glasgow is well known for its "wonder jobless", where these people purposely attend interviews and fail them in order to keep their benefits
However, they are quite easy to spot and conducting their interviews is so easy so as not to waste time
If you think that's bad
The new retail park is about to open in Las Vegas
There are 1200 vacancies
They had 16000 applicants!

I think you have a good point there about the DWP and suitable applicants! either way Im sure the jobs will be filled! But a lot of people out there are lazy time watsers!
Moving onto this Vegas thing! OMG! Wow that is one hell of a lot of applicants! Poor whoever it is that has to go through them all! Vegas I am sure is still doing well right now! Its full of money hehe!
16000 applicants though! Wow! Haha I wonder if they are on paper? There will be some huge piles of paper laying around lol!

The recruitment process must be somewhat of a mission if you consider the numbers involved, do you really think they go through all 16000 CVs before deciding on candidates? I know they do interviews then shortlist the best candidates and then do second interviews again and from there they choose who gets the job and who does'nt, then you have those people you are talking about m8internet, who just go to maintain their benefits, for all intent and purposes of wasting the recruiter's time, would get my hackles up for sure
I wonder if they just start at the top and if and when they have found what they needed they stop looking? It does seem a bit like a horrendous process doesnt it?

This was on TV earlier in the week (early morning)
Yes, they were paper applications
One of the smaller retail units had been completed (about the same size as a Tesco Extra store!)
They had about two container fulls of sacks of mail, so far
There were then about 20 sorting staff and a bin for each of the companies that had a retail unit, which was about 100 bins
Each one would then open a sack and start sorting out from the sack int a bin
There was then several representatives from each of the retailers (although some companies appeared to have more than two representatives, due to the volume of applications or the number they expected!)
They would then collect the mail from that bin, take it to a different area on the other side of the retail unit, and then open each application
They then decided from there whether it was a "no", "alternative", or "invite for interview"
The "alternative" was where that company thought the applicant wasn't suitable for them, but might be for one of the other retailers present
This is why the companies had more than one representative as they could walk between companies and have a look through these
Bloddy hell it sounds manic!
And what about the poor people that had to decide what bin it went in? with a hundred bins or so it must have involved a fair bit of leg work dont you think so?????
Rather them than me thats for sure! I would hate that!

That’s great that they passed on CV's to other companies where they thought the candidate would be suitable.
This process must have taken them a while though.
16,000 applicants for only 1,200 jobs? Inundated or what ?

I hope they had a lot of coffee or tea nearby. it sounds like a mission. But the good part was sending the cvs on. not many companies do that, if at all.
