On my usual rounds on the net this afternoon I saw an article about retail and xmas spending this year - http://www.drapersonline.com/news/2009-year-of-challenge-and-opportunity/1954493.article

Do you guys think there will be less spending this year leading to bigger discounts etc? Does everyone really have a reduced xmas budget?

Also if this is really the case then what does it mean for jobs in retail this xmas? Will there be as many out there?

Lower prices are better for the consumer for sure – but realistically will this not affect the retail sector in a big way, prompting job losses and store closures? Is there a bigger risk than we think involved?

I think this year peoples "Christmas expenditures" will be less than we have seen before. Some people are going to be jobless this Christmas therefore how could they possibly afford to buy extravagant presents?

I think their will be a decline is figures but who knows how big?

As for jobs I have seen stores recruiting normally but does anyone actually work in a shop here? And are the Christmas hours cut?

Xmas is a great time for jobs in retail. For many years my friends all used to get christmas positions to cover for holidays and the extra workload. At the end of the day we are all going to go christmas shopping so I reckon shops will still see an increase in customers however I don't know whether the customers are going to be spending as much... though I am not going to complain about discounts and deals!!

Do you think people will be budgeting a lot more this year? I remember seeing adverts for PARK - where you put away ££ per month and get it back in vouchers/money for your xmas shopping. Do you think those sorts of budgeting schemes will come into fashion for the next few years?

Haha bring on Primark and pound shops this xmas then hehe!

As far as I know people will be budgeting this year more than usual, i know a few of my family and friends that have all stated this! In my friends family they have agreed to make it all about the kids this year! Cutting down the cost a bit for themselves!

Im certainly broke, and I what I spend per head will go down for sure! I can't afford as much as I did last year! Although I will be getting gifts but my budget is cut for sure!

Im not so sure about xmas recruiting - I mean if spending is going to be cut how can they afford the staffing costs?? Or perhaps they will hire one or two extra people instead of 5 or whatever?

Yea same everyone I know had said they are going to be cutting down the spending. Their also even more motivated to get it done sooner rather than later as they want to get it done bit by bit rather as one huge cost.

I know shops are definitely recruiting for Christmas however not sure on the amount of extra staff they can hire.

That’s a good point actually I might start doing all my shopping now as well. It’s nice when you know you've got it done :)

I know, to be honest I think I'm going to hate christmas this year and its a shame as I usually love it!!

I've got to have an op in 6 weeks and I'll be off work for 6 weeks after :( not looking forward to that one bit! and its going to make me even more poor which i really don't need right now.

so why don't you get all your shopping out of the way before you have the operation? That way there is less to worry about after?

I'm not going to like christmas any less this year as for me its mainly about the family and being together! Not what I can and cannot spend you know?

I know its good fr some as its thier first opportunioty to work after long periods without jobs as well! There are positives out there?

I normally do my xmas shopping throughout the year. the xmas rush is harsh, and towns literally crawl with people doing last minte shopping :D. By that time, i am already relaxed and spending time with my family :D but its true a lot of people are trying to find extra work to cover the holiday season.

I have been contemplating taking an extra job for a while to see if I can get some extra pennies but my other haldf wont let me

I can believe that. I think maybe he doesnt want you to overwork yourself. Which is a good thing. I mean its ok to work a lot over the holidays, but to overdo it to the point where you dont really enjoy your holiday isnt a good thing at all.

Yeah I know what your saying and your right that is probably exactly what he is thinking hehe!

I would still think sometimes doing an extra job is the only way to get through these hard times! I wont be doing it though as there are barely any jobs out there as it is and I think anything out there would be better off going to someone who needed it more you know?

I read that Marks and Spencer in Lancashire are looking to hire 125 Christmas temps for the run-up.

That’s a vast amount don't you think? I'm sure the stores probably quite a large one then.

They held an open day at the Job Centre and apparently 250 people turned up. Really shows you how many people out there are in need of a job or more work.

WOW, its awesome having an open day tho. I mean, its sad to see that there are so little jobs out there, but in the christmas season there shud be a lot more jobs opening up dont you think?

Thats not really such a high number of people compared to some threads that I have seen on here - its 2 people per job if you think about it that way! Far easier to sort through those application numbers dont you agree?

I wonder if other M&S stores nationally are going to be recruiting as high a number of extra staff for the xmas run up? Wouls be good if they dd don't you agree?

I think so. xmas is way too commercialised i think. and they would probably hire more people during the run up to it. I couldnt say for sure if they would hire the same amount tho.
