What do you guys think about the first completely self-service shop opened by Tesco in Kingsley?

There are five self-service tills watched over by 1 employee. they say it increases efficiency and speeds up shopping trips. Apparently they have not had any negative feedback yet. I don't see how one person can keep an eye on 5 self-service tills and make sure that nobody tries anything funny.

This could be really bad news for retail jobs and definitely not something that is needed right now. :(

Luckily Asda has said that it would not follow Tesco's lead as they believe there should be some interaction for customer's at checkouts.

1 person will be overseeing the self-service tills

However, what about the rest of the store
Have you been to the store to see the setup?

If the store sells tobacco then this may not be included
Sales will either be from a locked display / store or a manned checkout (in most TESCO stores this is also a service desk)

Replenishment will also be performed during the day, so there is another member of staff to watch the store, if required

So I make that AT LEAST 2 members of staff, possibly 3

Some smaller supermarkets work with just 2 members of staff!

I haven't been to the store myself yet.

They only speak specifically about one person manning the self-service checkouts. I'm sure as you have mentioned there will still be other staff in the store as well.

But if they do decide that it is working and make more of their stores self-service checkouts it will have an impact on retail jobs eventually.

Asa customer I would hate that! Its horrible!

See what the world is coming too these days?

It will all be done by machines sooner or later and there will be no jobs for anyone out there in any sector! The machines will take over and become evil hehe!

I think it is better to have human interaction and customer services! Automated this that and the other is annoying! I hates it!

Sadly that is the way the world is going
More and more retailers are installing self-service checkouts
I am quite happy to use these, for small and basket purchases
However, I refuse to use them for larger shopping trips, as I have compared the amount of time and a traditional checkout is quicker
It is normally quite easy for 1 person to oversee up to 8 self-service checkouts
The only usual issues are weighed goods, damaged barcodes, rejected funds, and so on

Lets hope it doesn't catch on and that things are to remain as they are hehe!

As you said I don't mind using them for a few things but for a whole shop? Forget that! It would be too manic for me to cope with! They are hard enough to function with when you have a few items let alone the whole lot you know? Its madness dude!

as I've never used the service before I can't say whether I prefer it or not. Will jsut have to wait and see how the machines treat me the first time and take it from there. :p

I agree, I wouldn't want to live in a fully automated world either.

I will admit that I am a technophobe. I always feels so stupid when trying to work out how the stupid machines work, so if at all possible I avoid it or wait until my bf is with me and make him do everything. :D

I think if the world was like that we would all become fat and lazy! I mean what would there be left for us to do? Tell a machine what we want and get it?

HAha! Its a crazy thought and the scary thing is that we are prob not that far from the whole idea you know? We do rely too heavily on technology if you ask me!

It is the perfect excuse for watching all of these animated movies. My daughter loves them, but secretly I think I might enjoy them more than her.

Loved Monsters vs Aliens and she has even seen it yet.
