View Full Version : This should put you off retail jobs!
Well it all went down in Morrisons (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/kent/8382112.stm) in Canterbury on Thursday evening here in the UK!
A man with a firearm was in the store so the Police were called to the scene! One woman said that all she heard was a gun shot and then they were asked to leave the store and wait outside! A body was then carried out on a stretcher! Imagine something like that happening to you on your average shopping trip! I would have been scared s***less!!!!
I don’t think this kind of risk is meant to be part of the average retail job is it?
Crazy crazy days! The police apparently got the guy though, he had a gun shot wound to his arm!
Its all a bit suspicious as they later found a body in a nearby flat as well….

OMG. this is horrifying. Do they have any evidence that he was involved in the womans murder? I mean did he know her, or did he live there?
wow, I am really glad im not in retail anymore. I dont think i could work under those conditions.

I wonder now, this guy was seen wondering around the beer and wine aisle so can we assume he was drunk too? It does seem very suspicious that the women was found dead not to far away, could be a case of domestic violence related to alchohol, does anyone know if they have found anything else out about this case since then??, im wondering if he was in anyway related to or knew the murder victim.
Or at least was planning on being drunk pretty soon.
I just can't understand that the woman carried on as though nothing out of the ordinary had happened after she saw the man walking around with a gun.
I would immediately have either left the store or at least called someone to investigate it.

I have been unable to find anything about an alleged murder at a supermarket in Caterbury today
However I did find this :
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/lancashire/8393272.stm
It might make you examine the wrapping on your chickens a bit closer!
edit :
Found the story now (for some reason BBC don't want to cover it)
TOMAS Uptas, 32, was remanded in custody by Canterbury magistrates this morning.
He is charged with murdering Loretta Ralipys and being in possession of a firearm - a gas-powered ball bearing gun.
He was charged last night.
Uptas, of Victoria Road, Canterbury, was arrested after being shot by a police marksman in Morrisons supermarket, Wincheap, last Thursday evening.
A woman's body was discovered after officers went to a flat in Victoria Road the following day

Good Lord, so this was a hand made gun of sorts? Imagine shooting someone with that  quite brutal if you ask me, glad they caught him, he sounds like an unstable character.

a BB gun? I did a little searching and came up with this..... Absolute astronomy (http://www.absoluteastronomy.com/topics/BB_gun).
These are treated like handguns as well because of the potential to deliver fatal shots. These guns are easily available in stors and on websites as well. you get thm in adult and child variety, the adult one being the more dangerous of the two. Ive also read, and it can be called speculation at this point,( Im still researching ) that it can in fact be modified to shoot live ammunition.
Im glad they got him. People like that do not deserve to be on the streets.

Dark Phoenyx a neighbour of mine has 2 pellet guns for which both need a gun liscence as their fire power is such that it could kill a person, so you do get some very powerful pellet/bb guns, if you think about it even a normal pellet gun packs quite a punch and are pretty dangerous as they get embedded underneath your skin on impact which is quite hectic, I would not consider them toys by any means and I dont think I would give my child one to play with either.
Dark Phoenyx
04-12-2009, 08:59
Definately not. and that they are in fact marketed as toys is absolutely horrific. if any nephews ask for bb guns, Ill get em waterguns and let the family worry abt the bb gun request. I wouldnt even consider it a proper gift for a child.

04-12-2009, 09:15
Well you know how little boys are, what do they do with sling shots and bb guns?? they go round shooting birds and such and we have incidents where children have actually shot cats and dogs with them, there are other nicer toys to buy kids really, the toys of today are so cool I wish I was a kid in this generation sometime just so I can play with the toys :D, a little off the subject but have you seen guitar hero? I saw the other day that they have now come out with dj hero too, comes with your own turn table the works, Id like to give it a go, not to mention the Wii games those are pretty awesome too.
I read that article about the man that was filmed licking chickens and then putting them back. It's just so weird. Why would anyone want to lick a raw chicken? Must taste horrible.
I refuse to buy guns for any of the kids in the family. It is just no necessary to give them anymore exposure to violence and the tools used to kill people.

HUH wot article of a man licking chicken??? did i miss something here??
Ewwwwww I just read the article about the man licking ther chickens in Asda! That is awful! What would have possessed him to do something like that???? Lick a few raw chickens and put them back on the shelves? How can a man like that even get a job working in a supermarket? Weird man!
As for the dude in Morrisons - so he got charged in the end then? I wo9nder why the BBC didnt want to cover the story? Hmmmm....

Ah no yuk, sis..... thats sick and I bet not good for business either :p, who does such gross things (he does) :D Oh my goodness wot next ey? the world has gone nuts.
SallyA id also like to know the reason why BBC refused to do coverage of the story must be a good reason for it though.

id love to know as well. I hope he got wots comming to him tho. I would NEVER buy a toy gun for a child. even those little cap guns we used to get for kids. nowdays, you can get toys from your favourite superheroes and be just like them. from the clothes to the tools they use. hmmmmmmm makes me wnder just exactly wot the world is complaining abt when they say kids today are more violent than they were before. could it be the toys, and games etc?
as for licking chickens. uuuuuuuuuh HOW do you justify that :D it tastes good? or was he making sure they werent passed their sell by dates :D (jokes) it is gross tho. makes me think twice about buying chicken

The transformer toys are awesome i must say and yes there are some reli cool toys around these days like I said before, guns...... well no not for me or my child never, not that she'd want one anyway as she is a gurlie :D
Its not necessary the toys as such as cops and robbers along with playing indians etc has been around for a long time - weapons included in the costumes! The only thing I can think these days is the clear difference in the tv they watch and also the computer games! Some of them are so violent and kids end up getting thier hands on them its swful!

09-12-2009, 08:44
Children these days dont really know how to invent their own games or to occupy themselves, the tv and playstations take up most of their time, when we were small we used to be outside everyday till late doing all sorts, times have changed now and technology has taken over its sad reli.

Its true. and a lot of the time its the parents. i know Im pointing fingers, but its true. parents allow these kids to play these games because they cant cope with the attitude the kids present when they dont get what they want. I am a gamer. and i have a load of pc games that my daughters wont even see the title animations of. Games like hitman, grand theft auto, mmmm batman as well, Resident evil as well. these are games clearly not made for kids. even the lesser obvious ones as well like crysis, and a load of war games. I know kids will be kids, but honestly parents need to draw battle lines and stick to them when it comes to games and toys and such.
I agrre DArk Phoenyx you definately have to draw a line and stick to your guns so to speak ;)
Haha I remember when we were young as well - we used to spend hours playing outside with the other kids in our street! We pretty much amused ourselves to be honest!

Ahhh back in the day wot memories, roller skating, bicycles, hop scotch and hide nd seek :D I think our kids are definitely missing out, but I think the parents should spend more time with their kids doing these kinds of things keeping the old traditions alive wot you say?
Yes to be honest! But I guess lifestyles have changes a lot and sometimes it about having the time, everything in life these days is so fast paced! Its mad!

Time is definitely a factor, im always tired after work and dont feel like doing much besides putting my feet up for a while and relaxing, that does not happen often as there is still housework to do too
There is always housework to do. Food to cook, clothes that need to be washed. It's never ending.
So the kids get left to entertain themselves for large parts of the day because there is just no time to be able to do things with them. It's a pity, but unfortunately just the way things are done now.

I can relate. I used to play outside with my friends untill 8 or 9 at night, later most days. it was fun. my mom always knew where i was, lol when she couldnt see me. We used to play cricket, tennis, hide and seek, just walk around the neighbourhood, ride our bikes. sigh those were the days.

Haha me too! We were crazy as kids and spent most of our time outdoors playing! But I honestly think that was safer than spending it in front of the TV or on the net! It was just us kids in the neighborhood all outside playing - all the mum's took it in turns to keep an eye out for us etc so it was ok you know?
i dont even think people are as community orientated as they were back then either do you?
Mellijelli
15-12-2009, 06:32
Yeah before all the neighbors used to visit one another and chat over the wall, have get-togethers and the kids all knew each other, these days everyone keeps to themselves and there is no such thing as community anymore between people.
I live in a block of flats though and everyone knows everyone here and if there is any trouble we can call on each other for help but in general people dont do that anymore.
Dark Phoenyx
15-12-2009, 07:32
Its true. My parents were always going to visit people in our neighbourhood. Theyd sit and drink coffee after coffee, and the kids would play outside. was harsh going home tho. you had so much fun, you didnt want to leave. ah man the memories. if only people could go back to that. Here where i am, its mainly holiday goers, and then a small community. They generally keep to themselves out here.
We also spent most of the time outside or at neighbours houses. Jumping over the walls to go visit next door. Playing all kinds of games. We used to ride our bicycles until we could barely move we were so tired.
Kids these days just don't know what they are missing.
It's such a pity that the whole sense of belonging in a community, knowing everyone and things that are happening is gone. We miss out on so much now.

If you think about it, it all started with technology.
The first computer, and then the rapid advance of said computer, and then finally the home PC and games. Now there are games, online games, PSP's Wii's, playstations, you name it. everything is technology orientated, and right now about 90 percent of your work day involves a computer.
When i was a child, i never had a PC untill i was about 8 so i was outside all the time. then after i got my frst pc, i spent less time outdoors, even my friends played games with my at my place on my PC.

Yeah but now your friends do not need to come to yours to play do they? You can connect online from thr comfort of your own homes so there is no social interaction at all! Crazy isn't it?
I dont think it is good for the health or eyes!
I do agree that all jobs require 90% of your time in front of a PC these days - it is rare to find something that doesnt!

Somehow socializing has become a computer based phenomena which is awful, good if you have people in other countries to talk to but if you can go visit someone close id rather do that, human interaction has become computerized who would have ever thought....

Its true, from facebook to twitter, to skype to mobile apps like Mixit. you name it its there. But then I have heard a few stories of people falling in love from other countries and actualy end up being together. so its not all bad.
Mellijelli

I dont know how that would work once again human interaction is needed for true love to prevail, eye contract one on one reactions to each other and getting to know each others habbits likes and dislikes personally. I just dont think id trust an online relationship there is a limit to it that can not replace the real thing, just my opinion.
It is so strange to see some of the groups of kids that are actually all sitting around together and none of them are actually talking to each other. They all busy on their phones chatting to other people that aren't there or in some cases, the person sitting next to them.
It just doesn't make any sense to me.
Its weird isn't it? The way you see so many people - say for example on the trians, look around they are all on laptops, phones, ipods and so on....
I know, it's so strange. What did they do before they had all this technology to carry around with them?
I try to keep my use of technology to a minimum, especially in public places. Just seems really rude to me.

Read books on the tube! Thats what I used to do when I had to commute far for work, keep a good book in my bag! Not that they use these anymore?

One wonders how the worlds going to be in 10 years from now, will we have the space shippy kinda cars flying around, computerized houses, robots doing chores for us? some of that sounds kinda really cool i must say :D I suppose we cant keep wishing for something that has come and gone and look to the future and what it will bring us, things must change and we have to adapt to it, sometimes I sound like an old granny saying "back in my days" im not old yet so i best get with it

Hi there Blacktom.
Firstly, retail isnt really as popular as you may think it is. Firstly, many of the benefits you mention are a complete myth to most retailers, leaving staff severly underpaid and overworked.
Secondly, maintaining proper shifts in retail are as much a myth as the benefits are. Schedules are made and changed on a regular basis, so most staff work on rotation. Hours are not flexible, so you lose out if you do not work as your schedule permits.
Thirdly, most retail employers dont seem to worry too much if you dont show an interest in the job at the beginning. they look at your skills and past performance as well.
The only statement i can actually agree with here is that you need to stick to what interests you and what you excel in.
Other than that all i can say is that retail is one of the hardest sectors to work in, as far as hours, benefits and management is concerned, and then you also need to consider that not all customers are a walk in the park.
There is a lot of stress coupled with retail postitions, unless of course youre in a management position and are able to delegate responsibility to ensure that everything can actually run smoothly.
Regards
Phoenyx

Hi Blacktom
You new to this forum not seen you around here? anyway welcome.
Iv been reading your post here and iv a few comments..
Flexible scheduling, employee discounts, a fun work environment—these are just some of the things retail establishments typically offer their workers, so it’s no wonder retail is one of the most popular industries around.
Sorry but this has not always been my experience in the field of retail, if anything, long extended hours especially now over the xmas period is inevitable, try working for a month overtime and then tell me thats fun (i dont think so) one finds oneself totally overwhelmed at the end of the day after dealing with fussy customers, crowded stores etc etc and as for the fun work environment  that would depend on where you have worked before, retail would not be my first choice of work it would definitely be a last resort unless it was something i really enjoyed doing or if I had my own store then Id say yes, working for oneself is a whole different story altogether, but when working for a company you are restricted to their rules and their ways, one can put forward some ideas to improve the work environment but thats not to say they will be put into action.
Lastly the only reason retail is popular is cause they mostly offer temporary employment and jobs open up regularly because of this, most dont stick it out in retail jobs as its a hectic occupation with long hours and minimum wage especially jobs like cashiers, Id say if ur a student wanting extra cash go for it, if your looking for something long term, find something you love to do, unless your one of the higher up execs and are able to work your way up, that can still have some potential but to get there is no easy task believe me, most higher up positions in retail require degrees and extra qualifications and the chances of getting them in the current economic melt down is iffy.

Funny thing is tho, the text you replied to in this link is an exact copy of a page i found here : Buzzle.com (http://www.buzzle.com/articles/four-tips-on-how-to-score-retail-jobs.html).
You may not have added the entire post, but you copied most of it word for word.
