More retail jobs have been saved, BanbridgeLeader (http://www.banbridgeleader.co.uk/news/THIS-IS-GREAT-NEWS-FROM.5875741.jp/) says that Chamber of Commerce reacted swiftly and positively to the news that the Minister was set to turn down the controversial Tesco hypermarket proposal for Bridgewater Park.

Vice-chairman of the Chamber, Joe Quail, said the refusal, due to be released officially today was "great news" for traders in Banbridge town centre, as it would secure at least 300 local retail jobs (http://www.careers-jobs.eu/retail-jobs) in Banbridge.

At the time of going to press, no formal announcement had been made, but the Leader was reliably informed that Environment Minister Edwin Poots would be refusing the application on the grounds it would impact too severely on the economic health of the town centre.

Expressing his delight at the news which broke late yesterday afternoon, Mr Quail said, "This is very, very good news for everyone working in Banbridge town centre, as it means that over 300 jobs which would have been at risk, will now be safe.

"Everyone who works in retail in Banbridge should be pleased at this decision, as it has been widely shown that out-of-town superstores have a devastating effect on the vibrancy and vitality of town centres."

Im sure they must all be so relieved, imagine loosing your job with Christmas round the corner, that would be quite a blow, I also feel sorry for those people who have already been retrenched recently, Christmas is supposed to be a time to get together and have fun with the family, how does one manage that knowing you have no job, no income no nothing to keep going, its quite sad really.

Obviously that is very good news for those with jobs that might have been influenced.

I am, of course, very happy that nobody will be losing their jobs because of a bigger store, but there is no guarantee that those positions would have been lost or that more jobs might have been created if the store had gone ahead.

Nobody can really say for sure the exact effect it would have had.

I can imagine it would afefct thwe local economy in terms od smaller businesses having to close down or making less profit by the arrival of a supermarket in the area!

Although with regards to jobs - surely it would have created more than would have been lost! I mean how many people do you think work in the average Tesco Superstore?

Its good that they are refusing it though as I realyl do think these bigger superstores are taking over right now and eliminating competition and smaller independants!

It is kinda sad that the little businesses are loosing out badly because of the bigger superstores crushing them all, I actually enjoy all the little shops too, but how do they compete against such huge competition??

In most cases you just can't unfortunately! Its a shame though right? I like smaller shops too!

I think there should be a faitr mixture of the two rather than big monopolies everywhere!

Why cant they all just trade harmoniously together, guess business does not work that way and money is wot makes the world go round and thats what its all about.

Definately and if there was no competition is regards to price etc how would the consumer get a good deal?

Thing is it is not the bigger shops that cause the smaller businesses to close. It is the customers that decide that they would rather shop at the bigger store.

I know I would stick to the smaller store, it being more personal, I know the store and the people and it is just more comfortable. But others just don't care, they just switch over to the new store without a second thought.

Well I normally go to the shop where I know im gna get what im looking for, weather that be a big mall or small shop makes no difference to me really, but if you know the people in a certain store for a long time you tend to always go back there, for food stuff I usually get everything at our local Spar shop, there are a few of them around where I live, but one in particular I always go to and I know all the tellers there too and they great me when I come in as im always there which is nice.

I tend to stick to stores I know, it is just easier when the people know you and you know the people.

Obviously if I can't get what I want there I will have to go somewhere else, but will do it kicking and screaming all the way.
