Looks like people have not penny pinched this year after all on their Christmas shopping WalesOnline.co.uk (http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/wales-news/2009/12/14/festive-shoppers-battle-the-recession-on-the-high-street-91466-25383772/) says that Christmas shoppers seem to be fighting back against the recession, new figures showing that bigger numbers of shoppers are hitting the high street than this time last year.

The owners of some of the UK’s biggest shopping centres yesterday said the pre-festive picture has improved from the same period in 2008, while retail giant John Lewis has posted record weekly sales, just goes to show that people still have the Christmas spirit even in hard times which is so nice to see, I myself cant help myself when it comes to Christmas shopping, I think its one time of the year one must make an exception to spending.

They go on to say that Capital Shopping Centres, which owns half of the newly opened £675m St David’s development in Cardiff as well as some of the UK’s largest retail outlets including the Metrocentre in Gateshead and Braehead in Glasgow, said footfall through its stores was up year-on-year.

The number of people visiting the centres was up 3% for the year to date in 2009, with more than seven million shoppers flocking to CSC’s 14 centres in the past week alone, this should be good for people searching for part time retail jobs (http://www.careers-jobs.eu/retail-jobs) too although id not like to be working in retail around Christmas time the stores are so hectic that you are literally run off your feet and dead tired at the end of the day because of it, been there done that and dont want to anymore :D

I can imagine. I remember my retail experiences all too well. dead tired, aching head and feet. me ears even zinged from the noise. Definately not to be repeated at all. on the other hand tho, Im glad that sales are up. means that we can slowly start the recovery process and maybe see a light at the end of the tunnel finally.

Seems people will always find a way to do some Christmas shopping, no matter how bleak the economy at that stage.

Just not sure how they managing it though, because I know what I'm spending is much less than what I spend last year.

Its true, but look at it this way. Most people enjoy christmas too much, so they try make sure its more or less the same as every year. i mean its the one time of year when you can relax with your family, and the world in general is in good cheer over the holidays. For some its not about price at all, and the sacrifice they make would be worth it.

I went xmas shopping for my daughter on the weekend with my husband and went kinda wild  but i always go all out, thing is im not done yet lol, we not going to be going to see any family this year as we stay about 800km away from them so I just have to buy for her and my husband so I did not mind, I just love looking at my xmas tree filled with all kinds of nicely wrapped prezzies under it.

Hehe well I am going to my other halves on xmas eve and to my parents xmas day so i get two days of opening pressies hehe!

I see what your saying about people and their spending though Melli as altho w have tried not to spend that much this year i can honestly say that we have not been that good at holding back at all! Its hard not to spend less than £30 a head and I have to say I have gone over this quite a lot here and there!

Its good that spending is up though - lets just see what happens after all the sales I guess? I mean if it stays good in the new year after the sales and such then it is definitely good! Lets just see hey?

Our spending helps recover the recession in a way, more profit made by shops more jobs (http://www.careers-jobs.eu/) are saved and less companies have to close down, at our expense of course :D xmas is a time everyone spends their money and that money is greatly needed to save the economy dont you think?
