Do you think it's a good idea to bring in outside trainers , or would you prefer to do it in house ?

I think it depends on what you are training for and your inhouse capabilities? both have advantages really?

It depends on how big your company is

For larger companies they tend to have a training team
Some of them are ex-Managers, who experience
Others are specialists with training, so have little or no experience

For medium companies they tend to have one training person
Again, this is usually either an ex-Manager OR a specialist

Specialist training is occasionally provided by external agencies, but it is usually for more specialist items
An example would be First Aid training
Equally, the employer will usually only use this for items that are NOT mandatory and where a percentage of employees require to have this
Another example is Food Hygiene training
The employer can then body swerve any claims, as the training was provided by an external agency, but believed the course was sufficient to meet the minimum legal requirements

Hi, we recently had a training session in customer service. it is a massive company with over 700 staff and we do have in house trainers, but for this instance they decided to get outside trainers.

I think half way through the 1st day they realised this was a BIG mistake. Yes they new all about customer service but in my job role, we have to deal with customers from all different backgrounds, eg, disabled, language barriers and so on. The lady that was doin the training was informed of all of this, but then didnt really mention anything on it, she was asked, but we were told she would come back to it.

She also seemed to pick on people, she saw a weakness in a collegue of mine and played on it ALOT. we had to do role play, and i for one, hate it. pretending your on the phone to a difficult customer is alot different to when ur actually on the phone, you dont have people watching and judging you.

She also upset another one of my collegues by saying she dealt with an elderly tnt in the wrong way, by expressing too much interest, the customer called, all worked up, screamed down the phone and shouted her husband was dead, then hung up, my collegue called the customer back, obviously worried about her. It turned out the lady had done this so she would get attention, which then upset my collegue. The trainer told my collegue she should not of called the customer back and try to help.
The trainer didnt seen to understand that we deal with peolple who have mental disabilities.

The point im trying to get at is sometimes outside training is not as good, they dont work in the environment that you do, therefore how can they tell how to do it better??

Pookylu that is some great advise there and you are totally spot on - how can someone try and tell you how to do something if they have never done it themselves?

When you need training in areas where the outside trainers have more knowledge and skill then I think it is acceptable - but with things like what you had I think in-house training wins every time, unless you course there is an industry specialist coming in!
