View Full Version : Will Tesco’s new venture create more jobs?
I read the most interesting and weird article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8478414.stm) this afternoon! Tesco have joined forces with Amber Entertainment to create straight to DVD movies from books written by well known authors!
They are starting their venture off with a kick; they are doing a movie from books written by Jackie Collins! In the deal they will stay out of the creative film making process, and instead focus on the marketing of the films and also have exclusive rights to sell the DVD’s.
I didn’t know this – but at Christmas they also had exclusive rights to sell the Christmas edition of Madagascar! Crazy isn’t it?
I suppose they would have created a lot of jobs with this and will continue to as well which is a good thing but I still can’t believe it! First Finance and now Media and movie making! It makes you wonder what’s next for Tesco doesn’t it?
this seems exceedingly risky !!!!!! Do you think it's true ?

lol well Its a risky start using Jackie collins novels. I wiki'd her novel losting and the titles alone made me blush :D I didnt think shed be in the same lines as Barbara Cartland.
I think i only read the first chapter of one of her books.... then my face threatened to set the book on fire, I returned it to my friend and said no thanks :D
Hehe well it was in the BBC website so am pretty much inclined to believe it?
What do you think Emma?
Phoenyx haha your comment made me laugh! Im not sure I have ever read one of her books? :p
I think it's a bit stupid to be honest , tesco are known for fresh food, not oscars lol

Consider yourself lucky. its all close encounters of all sorts. maybe thats where Miss Collins got her inspiration from.
Truth be told, I only read a chapter out of curiosity..... till it got too um...well needless to say ive never picked up a Barbara Cartland again. I prefer David Eddings. Altho I have read Maeve Binchy tho. I wouldnt mind finding a few of her books as a movie.

I agree Emma but it does seem lately they seem to be dipping their fingers in all sorts of pies! Im not sure that it is a good idea to be spread as wide as that? Do what you do well and all that dont you think so?

you must have read some yourself richard if you know why Dark Phoenyx was blushing ;) but yeah definately agree with you Sally , there is a massive difference between selling a cabbage and making a movie

lol scouts honour :D.
It is a big difference yes. Most companies dont like doing so many things at the same time. But if they've planned it out properly, and have the resources to do it, then its worth a try.
lol why they didnt use different author to start off with is beyond me :D

Well known authors, a few come to mind but deffs not Jackie Collins  id fancy some Georgette Heyer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgette_Heyer) novels made into movies, i like the 18th century novels quite a bit, got some detective and historical romance to them, and then the horrors but most of Stephen Kings books have been done already onto film so scratch that idea :) another good author is Joanne Harris (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joanne_Harris) one move has already been made from a novel of hers called Chocolat which featured Johnny Depp, so more of those would be a treat id say, maybe we should give tesco some novel ideas hehe excuse the punn :D

I guess well just have to wait and see.
Wot titles would you like to see made into movies? For me, Id say:
David Eddings (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Eddings)
Maeve Binchy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maeve_Binchy)
Emily Bronte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Bront%C3%AB)
Oscar Wilde (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oscar_Wilde)
to name a few :D

There are just so many good books that one could make movies from i cant think of them all now

That would be a good idea i think. It will also be a good way to advertise the venture as well, and get a public opinion about it as well.

Maybe i should go check out their website and see if there is a suggestion box there somewhere hehehe
Could be a good idea. If they knew people were actaully going to buy the movies after they have been made.
And buy enough to make up for the amount of money they had to spend making it in the first place. Suppose it will mean more work for the actors out there looking for their big break.

Well that's another thing hopefully they wont be using some cheesy unknowns to play the main roles of these movies, cause that's bound to be a royal flop, if they want it to be a success they will need to use well known actors and that's going to be a bit pricey don't you think Poppy?
I dont know but im beginning to think this is going to cost them more and not add to profits unless the sales are extremely good.
Think about this people go to dvd shops to rent movies as they have all the new releases etc, will people now be trading that in to get dvds at Tesco stores instead?
The only way it could work is if these new movies are first of all well done, made according to public demand is as far as titles go, price is right and are exclusive to Tesco stores, not to be found in any dvd stores, then id say it could really be a success. I could go into marketing or advertising hehehe :D
Haha melli if I were you I would look for the suggestion box on thier site and put yourself forward for the job lol! Sounds like you have it all worked out and could do a really good job of it all! :D
