Apparently the retail sector made 21512 people’s jobs (http://www.careersandjobsuk.com/latest-vacancies.html) redundant across England and Wales in 2008 jeeez thats a ton of jobs lost, but they say that jewelers are trying to avoid this as to maintain their sales.
The retail industry made the third largest number of redundancies after the services and the manufacturing industry, a study which was done by financial analysts CreditPal.
In total, 1,353 retailers went into liquidation in 2008.
Despite this, two jewelers have argued downsizing staff will not save a business with falling profits, which makes sence to me, if it worked before why cant it still work, I dont seem to get all this hiring and firing and retrenchment going on and its been going on way too much, just look at the statistics of all the jobs lost its staggering.

:( OMG no...... THAT many? this is rediculous. I dont get the hiring and firing at all. If its failing with 30 staff, its still going to fail with 20 staff, even if the other 10 people's salaries have been added to profits now instead of outgoing debts.

Yeah one wonders if there is a method behind the madness here, 1353 Retailers went into liquidation thats in 2008 so what about 2009 and now 2010?
So no jobs (http://www.careersandjobsuk.com/), hence no money, so where do you think this is all leading to?
Ever seen that Kevin Costner movie called Waterworld, the after affects of the ice caps melting, well i wonder what will happen if the employment industry fails altogether what a disaster that would be, we'd be in a really messed up apocalypse fighting for survival.
Hehe maybe we would all go back to the old ways, grow oput own foods and keep a little farm etc etc, trade within communities for products that we need that others have and so on - no money and the only jobs will be looking after your livelihood hehe! Can you imagine that?
I am not quite sure I can imagine a world with no shopping though - I love shopping!

We would have to learn how to weave and make our own clothes and sew and all sorts just like in times long ago, iv always preferred the previous centuries anyway i think i could easily adjust.
Funny thing i was sitting in the car just yesterday outside the shop waiting for my husband and I was looking at every ones clothes and wondering how we got so plain and simple as years went by, if you look at the attire of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries they were so beautifully clothed with dresses and hats, never went out with parasols to protect that milky white complexion, and the men in their nice coats and hats, and their clothes were all hand made too with much detail and care, these days people wear plain T-shirts with slops and jeans or shorts, no effort or craftsmanship involved.
I love accessories and I try have all my outfits quite unique, I dont like looking like everyone else so i always add a bit here and there and make sure I buy clothing items that are a bit out of the ordinary and as I said ACCESSORIES thats key for me, I dont know maybe im just an old fashioned gal :)

Id be able to do that. lol Ive always thought i belong in the victorian era. Long flowing gowns, right down to the music most days. It would really be cool to make my own clothes tho. Ive played around with sewing and its a lot of fun actually :D
Id love to know how to sew! I think its one of those things that if I was taught how I could be good at hehe!
I see what your saying about the changes in the way people dress and stuff! Dresses were much more interesting then you arre right, but not everyone could afford all the pretty ones with all the details, they were reserved for the rich
So if we were in that era what would be wearing/doing? Heheh!

hehehehehe Id probably be married, sitting at home with the nanny and the kids, teaching the girls to read, write and act like proper ladies, embroidering in the afternoons in the garden. wot id be wearing..... hmmmm Probably satin and velvet, or lace and cotton, I think even if i was a barmaid in that time, Id still be happy wearing the skirts :D :P

Id totally make my own clothes if i did not come from the richer side of things, and your right Dark Phoenyx i think even the clothes of the bar maids were cool minus the silly little cloth hats with frill they used to wear thats kinda ugly hehe, im not a great seamstress but my mom is ace at it so i could learn the trade of sewing im sure, and if u think about it there would be no tv or pc's to do anything else but learn some skills like piano or embroidery or some such stuff, yeah really i could live with that...:D
Not so sure about all the sewing and frilly dresses. Have never been much of a frilly, dressy person. Prefer my jeans, shorts, tights or anything else. I don't think that will make me very popular in that time.
Don't mind the part about growing my own food. I quite like gardening.

I suppose if i was born into that era not knowing that jeans existed or that women were able to wear them it would not be a problem, but you could have a point there Poppy I love my jeans and sneakers too :D

lol me too. altho mainly its jeans and sox. :D never wear shoes indoors. but when i have to go out, its either my sneakers or my boots.
I think id miss technology for sure, I spent the weekend without it coz i was moving. at night theres tooooo much time to fill. thats usually when i work on an art pic of mine, or play a game.
The embroidery isnt really that hard, lol my mom made sure i could play at least 4 instruments, and sing, and i have learnt to sew and embroider and quilt :D
I think i would have fit in perfectly with that era :D
My sewing skills are seriously underdeveloped, I would have to put in quite a bit of practise. My poor fingers will be so full of holes from constantly pricking myselves. :p
I would miss music the most, because unfortunately I can't play any instruments or sing, so I would have to live in silence.:(
