I read the funniest thing today and it made me think - is Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/) that should be restricted in all work places or should you trust your staff to be able to not take liberties and keep it to specific time frames?

It was reported that one Bulgarian official was sacked for being caught on Farmville during work time! Do you really think that these things can affect people’s day so greatly that they would risk losing their jobs over it? I mean do you think staff would seriously sit there on Facebook games all day or do you think they can be trusted to manage thier own time effectively?

The company I work for does not completely ban Facebook but allows access during lunch time and before and after working hours, they trust us to manage our time effectively and to not abuse thier trust! Do you think there is a need for more vigilence than this?

We are not allowed it in our place, even on breaks !!!

I think most people will be fine , but you do have those that do take liberties !!!,

and it's those muppetts that mean we all can't go on it lol

Our store systems only allow access to 'approved' sites - which is fine as no-one generally needs access to the PCs at store level.

A couple of people I know had access to facebook at work, but because some people couldn't control themselves to only lunch times or after work they have all been banned from it.

I've never had access to facebook at work so am not really worred one way or the other. It is anyway personal and shouldn't be of concern when you are working.

yello :D its good to be back :D missed chatting to all of ya. :D

mmmm facebook is always a touchy subject. There are people i know that are addicted to it. and if they cant acess it on their pc's, then theres always facebook mobile. I can understand farmville tho.

I had friends that loved playing the game, and it can be addictive. people need to keep it to breaks tho. I mean you cant just sit on FB all day and not get anything done. Then ask "why" when youre fired because your work isnt up to scratch.

I think companies that ban it completely are right. that way you can make sure the work gets done. it makes sense. and to be honest, i dont think its just facebook either. myspace, twitter, the works shud be monitored.

Iv had my facebook for a few years now so nothing new there, yes goobox games can be cool to play when ur board but deffs not in work time I DONT have the time inbetween work for that ever and wots more my work can be monitored minute by minute, also im way to loyal to be sneaky like that and take paid hours and spend it playing games instead of doing my job.

I basically only check my facebook every few days also and go on if iv nothing else to do that night then my husband and I will play elements or pyramids or something like that, but thats about as far as it goes, i have better games to play which require more than 5 min here and there, like The Sims which run independently from a disk and requires that you close off everything else before running it, so impossible to play during work hours Laughing and then of course my playstation 2, and im sure nearly everyone by now knows i like doing digital art on Photoshop and this is my hobby strictly reserved for after hours bordom and pleasure hehe.

So thats my story folks no skimping on work in work hours for me its just wrong i think, so to those addicts i say get a life there is more to it than games and facebook and especially with jobs so scarce these days one cannot afford to play around with the one you have...

I agree with you Emma, there are definately a few out there that ruin it for the majority! Unfortunately I might add!

I do think it is very immature to waste hours on these things in work time instead of doing your job! I mean a little here and there fine! But its when work starts not getting done and people enbd up spending too long on these sites that there becomes a problem really wouldn't you say?

Definately. I agree SallyA.

I guess a lot of people use facebook to make their lives seem better. you make friends with people all over the world, and theres always someone willing to talk to or play a game with or something. so i guess in a way its a good thing, coz we dont completely lose touch with reality. but you get some that get addicted to it, either because they have an alternate lifestyle on it thats exciting to them, or its the only happiness they have at a low time of their lives.

For me i get bored easily so when something is new i can sit with it for a few hours, but after a few days the novelty starts wearing off and i move onto something else, iv always had a wondering mind and am very inquisitive so im always doing something different at any given time, facebook although an excellent tool to communicate and get in touch with friends and family and even useful for things like advertising things you need maybe a website or some event coming up and so on still gets a bit much eventually.

Maybe cause im married and have settled down in life these things dont bother me too much, and i dont have the need to be on them all the time except to catch up now and again, it could be different for single people or lonely people who knows but the fact remains work is not play so do your socializing after hours :)

I just have better things to do, like my artwork, or the new gardens were going to start at our new house etc. At the end of the day its pointless spending so much time doing something so unproductive.

 is it safe to answer ? lol I spent the weekend working on my garden, helping my eldest with a weaving project, and teaching my youngest about the insects found in my garden. ( lol i actually survived that one pretty well considering i hate bugs in all variations :D) and to be honest, i didnt think of my pc much during it all. I didn however play Sims 2 on sunday tho. lol have to get my weekend fix. other than that, my art page can wait till my break, and i dont have a facebook page to think of. :D

:D Its safe I promise, think the weekend was just what i needed seeing that i dont have to do weekend work any longer, I dont have 2 weeks of endless work stretches in front of me :p whoo hoo, sorry had to get that out.

Thanks for the nostalgic picture you painted in my mind, sounds like you had some awsome family time together outdoors, as soon as i get a house of my own, which will be in a year or so, ill be doing much gardening too in the form of herbs and flowers of all varieties, think as i get older my moms interests have started rubbing off on me , but im seriously a jack of all trades iv tried electrical, technical, art, and loads of random hobbies, happens when you have a very inquisitive, inquiring and imaginative mind, and note im not complaining im glad i always have something to keep my hands and mind busy with, whats that saying? .... "idle hands are the devils playground"

lol that i can relate to.

My curiousity will probably be the death of me one day, but i cant complain, its given me a wealth of things that i can now do with ease, like my art, I can play 4 musical instruments, lol Im learning new languages, I can sew and embroider and quilt, and thanks to master jamie oliver, :D my kitchen is a pleasure to be in lol.

mmm electrical Im only good at when its a PC :D I am trained to fix and build them after all, lol other than that, is shocking (lol pardon the pun).

It depends on where you work. For retail... i would say no. But if you work in an office or something then it should be acceptable, assuming it doesn't infringe on one's work.
