Times Online (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/money/consumer_affairs/article7120252.ece) say that The British Retail Consortium (BRC) estimates British consumers spent £1 billion on TVs and other electronic equipment in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup
Richard Dodd, of the consortium, said: “There is uncertainty about what will happen in the wake of the election on jobs (http://www.careersandjobsuk.com/), taxes and public spending. Retailers are finding they have to keep offering discounts to attract people.”
In my opinion discount sales on anything in any store will always attract people, when i walk into a clothing store and i see some clothes racks with the sign sale on i go directly there and rummage through to see if i can find something of my liking and buy it, with the economy in such a bad way and people out of work its probably going to be even worse, no one wants to spend their money on high priced goods and instead fish out the bargains first.
Its a good technique to keep sales up i think though and to attract people to a store, but im also thinking these people bought electronic equipment and tv's??? these items are not cheap, amazing what people do for the love of sport hehe :D

The question is did people buy their electrical equipment specifically for the World Cup 2006, or would they have bought it any?
I bought my 50" TV simply as an upgrade to replace a TV near the end of its life
However, that TV failed just before Christmas and so I wanted the replacement in time for the Winter Olympics
If you take a look at the "promotions" for TVs at the moment, many are based around the World Cup 2010
The SONY one has great appeal, £10 cash back for every goal England score (excluding penalties after extra time)

Well the article does say "in the run-up to the world cup" so their sales must have increased by quite a bit during this time, and more than usual.
Sports is a huge industry and people go ballistic for it, be it football or rugby or whatever, I know my dad never misses the world cup as he was a professional footballer in his day and an all round sports man playing everything from golf to cycling in the Argus, he recently replaced his TV too come to think of it with a bigger, better version

It reminds me of the heineken ad i saw recently. a row of football dressed in blue, getting ready to go out to play, they run out and stand as any footballer would stnd to sing the national anthem, and then one guy drinks a henieken and you realise theyre only supporters. and when they sit down, i saw the biggest TV ive probably seen in my life, hanging on the wall.
lol must be great to watch movies on etc, but to go thru all that for sports? lol you can tell im not a fanatic.

i saw the biggest TV ive probably seen in my life, hanging on the wall
I've seen the worlds largest TV (as at April 2010)
It is a 30 foot LED (note it's measured in feet and not inches!)
I was sat right at the front row just to the left of the conductor
Personally I would have had a seat slightly further back
It's not my image so it may not last long :

I wonder if we'll see an increase in the number of faulty TV's returned to store this month?
Heard plenty of people who have watched the England games complaining about a seemingly common fault where a round white shape blemish on the screen keeps flying across the screen into the england goal. I guess if they are within the 30 day "exchange" period there could be a surge in demand for toasters and foot spa's
