Do you hold regular staff/ team meetings ?

And how important do you think they are?

I know alot of people that do/have them , and also people that don't

Personally I think meeting the staff is ESSENTIAL
However, I think meetings are USELESS
I prefer to meet with staff on a personal level, you usually get less of the truth!
When there are large meetings more of the negative points get raised
Equally, the more assertive staff tend to take over

that is true actually. I think briefings with important updates should be gioven daily if possible including targets etc.
but people do need to have that one to one time to talkk, i know i enjoy it when given the opportunity

Many large retailers have "huddles" and sales target meetings, etc
One of these is Debenhams and all the staff (who are present at the beginning of the day) have to attend a "daily huddle"
I see many of these, as they often interrupt the work I do as the staff have to leave to go and attend these
Some of information is useful where someone has been away on leave, but sales targets in such an environment are meaningless
They also put a target on the number of "accounts" opened, however once a salesperson has reached that target why should they stop?
With another retailer they look at that differently and do NOT advise the staff what the target is, just reminders of who are in the top 5
At the end of the campaign the target is released, the top 3 still get their performance bonus, and if anyone exceeds the target they get a further bonus based on that

Other items can be referred to at such meetings, to reinforce issues or deadlines, such as end of year holiday pay requests must be received by the end of the week (use them or lose them), expenses and mileage forms for a recent trip having to be submitted before the end of the week, and so on

I think meetings with the team have to be done effectively. If you are holding a meeting just to hold one, it is a waste of time. You need to have a purpose, whether it be sharing information, setting goals for the day or recapping recent results, there needs to be a purpose. I also agree that it is important to know your staff on a personal level. This will help you make the meeting more effective as you will understand how they need the information presented to them. This will help promote full engagement with the concepts/results you are working on. Human resource management (http://www.paycor.com/) can help develop these types of meetings. They can assist with topics, structure, timing. It could also allow you the opportunity to share company objectives as they change.
