Default Amazon ships 2m parcels a day in record Christmas

Amazon had a record Christmas in the UK and its managing director here, Brian McBride, expects a strong start to the new year.

“When times are tough people still like to spoil themselves,” he said. “At the same time they like to seek out value.”

During the Christmas peak Amazon was shipping out two million parcels a day from its four British warehouses.

Mr McBride said there had only been “minor disruption” from the bad weather and postal strike. He reported strong growth in third-party business where Amazon handles the internal business of many retailers, including Debenhams, Hamleys and La Senza.

International sales, which include Germany, Japan, France and China as well as Britain, rose by 49 per cent to $4.56 billion (£2.82 billion), catching North America where sales rose 36 per cent to $4.96 billion.

Mr McBride said the British launch of the Kindle digital book reader had gone well and that worldwide there were more than two million in use. Globally, in cases where books and downloads are available, Amazon handled six digital downloads for every 10 physical book sales.

The group's profits rose 71 per cent in the fourth quarter to $384 million and it forecast a higher than expected 43 per cent rise in current quarter sales.

WOW!!! Someone has been doing well haven't they!!!!!!

Seriously though it is good to see that some companies are doing well - and to be doing that well is a bonus indeed! It definitely shows that online shopping is hitting a new trend and becoming more and more popular for sure!!!! I for one am a lover of shopping online hehe!

In some sense yes and in others no - I mean there are certain things you have to buy in store or you have to go through all the hassle of bad fits and stuff you know? Shoes for me are one such item - I like to try them on and walk around in them a bit before I buy them - to be sure they are good. Oh and not to mention most clothing items. I can only buy online from certain stores. So for now at least these shops and jobs are safe?

Oh and I love getting my DVD's in store as well - when they are like £3 hehe!

Like you I download most music though.... There is something about browsing the town and shops that you just can't get from online shopping don't you agree?

wow, Id also buy a lot more dvds if i could get them that cheap. lol I can agree tho, sometimes it is better to go to the shops, i mean its better to get out and walk around the stores and just relaxing. Sitting at a coffee shop or something simialar afterwards..... its a lot better than ordering some stuff online and walking to your kitchen for a coffee

I download loads of music as well. I think the last cd i bougght was abt 3 years ago, but that was a rare disc i HAD to get my hands on for sentimental reasons .
