Default How many Jobs will the BBC axe?

Who has heard about the BBC now making cut backs?

    See here - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8544150.stm

I was getting ready for work this morning watching tv as usual and couldn’t believe it when they said they were making cuts as well! Do you think many jobs will be lost as a result of this?

I think in particular right now BBC 6 radio and Asian Network are facing the axe! As far as I am aware they will also be making cuts to the BBC online services! How mad is that? I love that they have a little bit of everything! It seems a bit awful that they are going to make these cuts don’t you think?

At the moment they are saying that there could potentially be a total of 600 job losses across the board once all the changes are made!

What do you guys think? Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

That's one of the problems if you try and cater for every market
Sometimes you just lose sight of what you are actually doing, and historically BBC is dreadful at this

Take their website, which is also going to be trimmed back, as an example
It was recently found that some sections repeated themselves AND were being worked on by different people
Because the two sections weren't aware of this quite often they created the SAME content!

It's the same with many of the radio stations
There is a great diversity, but this often dilutes the local content

This is where local media gains an audience and historically has alway performed better

    =====

Here in Scotland is a good example
We have BBC Scotland, and their News coverage is very good, but their local programming over the last 20 years has been dreadful
Only recently has this improved with two new drama series which are apparently doing quite well
Ironically, ITV realised this market existed, hence why a series like Taggart did so well, produced in Scotland and aired nationally
Sadly the BBC never embraced this and as far as I am aware still has not!
For any viewers outwith Scotland, do you receive the two TV series?

It then gets even worse for radio
Although I have Radio 1 saved on my car entertainment system, I only listen to music on Radio 1
For News I turn to a local radio station or BBC Radio Scotland
The News on Radio 1 is useful for headlines, but rarely is there anything relevant to Scotland

It is then pretty much the same for any other BBC radio station, the lack of local diversity is very poor

M8internet I see where you are coming from and as ever you provide a very good view point and also help me see the logic behind certain things!

I was more disappointed about the BBC Radio 6 and Asian Networks being in the proposed cuts as what will replace them? They are both very unique stations and no where plays anything quite in the same league really if I am honest!

Regarding the News - I never listen to the news on the radios but rather browse the net or watch it on TV so can see your view point there!

As for the TV - apparently this is where they are hoping to make the improvements so lets hope they actually do hey?

I've never had an inclination to listen to Radio 6 - how much choice do we need?

    I wasn't even aware there was a Radio 6 !
At a push I will listen to Radio 2

However, the termination of cultural radio stations is an insult to the diversity of this country
Here in Scotland we have BBC Alba, which they have tried to close down twice
I don't know what the viewing figures are, the main issue is actually the time at which they show these programs!
Equally, there has been a great shift from Radio Alba into Radio Scotland, but again the time of these broadcasts are socially unacceptable
So it's no wonder three localised radio stations appeared
Furthermore, many places in Scotland can't get a reliable FM signal!

    Its crazy isn't it?

I wonder how they decide what to do and when and what to cut etc?

maybe they looked at figures and ratings etc. and if the shows werent doing too well, they decided to start there.

Yeah maybe? We will have to wait and see how it turns out I guess won't we?

Anything can happen and maybe by 2012 they would have changed thier minds and be going down some different tracks or whatever?
